Adaptation Practice is a way of training ourselves to see life as it really is and to live in harmony with the understanding that comes from that insight.

In order to change from how we are now to being able to cope with emotion and how our moods and feelings affect us, we need to follow a way. In Adaptation Practice this way is laid out in a programme of simple instructions that any adult could follow provided he or she is willing to try.

This consists of instructions on how to change how we react to situations without causing harm or upset to ourselves or other people.

The practice starts with what we can do: not with what we cannot yet do. Inner strength develops in us by following the instructions just as muscular strength develops by doing physical  exercise. Gradually, an inner strength develops with which we are able to cope with ever stronger emotion, moods and feelings.

The practice itself is derived from years of study and training in Zen Buddhist practice. It does not depend on drugs or theories or concepts or any other modes of thinking. And yet the practice is at all times in harmony with medicine and science.

From the Zen Buddhist point of view, the psychological and mental distress that afflicts us and leads to so much suffering is regarded not as originating in the head as thoughts, but in the midriff as emotion.

Emotion gives rise to all the physiological changes in the body, all the unpleasant sensations, moods, feelings and thoughts that so distress us.

This understanding and insight into human nature and the human mind constitute the most profound and insightful philosophy and psychology ever known.

They provide us with a safe and effective way to relieve suffering, to cope with emotion and how our moods and feelings affect us.
